Mumbai Airport Plans T1 Redevelopment, Shifts 5 Million Passengers to Navi Mumbai
Mumbai Airport to redevelop T1, shifting 5 million passengers to Navi Mumbai. Temporary transition to minimize disruption.

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has unveiled a redevelopment plan for Terminal 1 (T1) of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The plan involves demolishing the existing T1, which has been delayed for over nine years, and rebuilding it to increase the airport's capacity.
The redevelopment is expected to increase the airport's capacity from 55 million passengers per annum (mppa) to 65 mppa. To facilitate this, MIAL proposes to temporarily transition 5 million passengers to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). This transition will be phased to avoid disruptions to flying.
Leading carriers IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air have finalized transition plans for their international flights to NMIA, accounting for around 3 million passengers per annum. The remaining balance slots will be transitioned out of CSMIA T2 for the Northern Summer 2027 season.
The new T1 is expected to be completed by December 2030, with a passenger-centric design and enhanced passenger processing capabilities. The annual passenger handling capacity will surge by 33% from 15 mppa to 20 mppa, with increased check-in counters, security lanes, and contact stands.
The airport operator has assured airlines that the temporarily transitioned international traffic will be fully restored to CSMIA once the T2 expansion is completed. This phased transition will ensure passenger safety and minimal operational disruption while developing Mumbai as a world-class aviation hub.
