Heavy rainfall floods Mumbai streets, disrupts traffic across city
Over 200mm downpour triggers widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion.

Mumbai experienced severe weather disruptions on Thursday as intense rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters battered the city, causing widespread waterlogging and significant traffic congestion across major arterial roads and residential areas.
The sudden cloudburst transformed key intersections into temporary water bodies, stranding commuters and forcing vehicles to crawl at snail's pace during peak hours. Several low-lying areas, particularly in the eastern and western suburbs, reported standing water that remained on roads for extended periods, hampering normal vehicular movement and public transportation.
The meteorological department attributed the heavy precipitation to an active monsoon system affecting the western coast. Such extreme rainfall events are becoming increasingly common during the monsoon season, overwhelming the city's drainage infrastructure which often struggles to manage such volumes.
The waterlogging created cascading challenges for Mumbai's working population. Office-goers faced delayed commutes, while essential services including emergency vehicles encountered obstacles in reaching their destinations. Schools and offices reported attendance disruptions as residents chose to stay indoors.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed teams to clear clogged drains and pumping stations, though response times remained slower than required. Residents in flood-prone areas shared concerns about the recurring nature of such disruptions, demanding long-term infrastructure upgrades.
Authorities appealed to citizens to avoid non-essential travel until water levels receded, and the weather department warned of continued intermittent showers over the coming days.
