India's Urban Economy Expands Beyond Big Metros

India's urban economy is undergoing a significant transformation, with growth no longer limited to its largest metropolitan cities. According to the PRICE-Tata Sons report, 'The Many Urban Indias', the country's urban landscape can be divided into four distinct groups: the Big Six, Boomtowns, Breakout cities, and Frontier cities.

The Big Six, comprising Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Chennai, continue to dominate the urban economy, accounting for 18.1 percent of national income and 30.3 percent of savings. Despite containing only 7.6 percent of India's population, these cities represent 46 percent of consumption across the studied cities. The average household in the Big Six earns Rs 23.2 lakh annually, spends Rs 13.5 lakh, and saves Rs 9.7 lakh.

Bengaluru leads the Big Six in terms of household income and savings, while Delhi benefits from its large population and consumer base. Chennai, on the other hand, records the highest consumption-to-income ratio and heavier household debt.

The 19 Boomtowns, including Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Jaipur, and Indore, are witnessing rapid growth, with nearly 51 percent of their households now classified as middle-income. These cities account for 5.1 percent of India's population, 8.5 percent of income, and 8.3 percent of consumption. Notably, Thiruvananthapuram, Vadodara, and Surat report higher household spending than the Big Six average.

The 25 Breakout cities, such as Tiruppur, Ludhiana, Rajkot, Varanasi, and Moradabad, are expanding through specialized industries like textiles, auto components, tourism, healthcare, education, and sports goods. About 67 percent of their residents are of working age, supporting employment and consumption. However, household income varies significantly, ranging from Rs 19 lakh in Amritsar to Rs 7.9 lakh in Moradabad.

The 50 Frontier cities, with nearly 10 million households, have an average annual household income of Rs 12 lakh, expenditure of Rs 9 lakh, and savings below Rs 3 lakh. Chandigarh stands out with an income of Rs 28.3 lakh, while Amravati averages Rs 6.3 lakh. The diverse profiles of these cities underscore the need for businesses and policymakers to adopt city-specific strategies rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

The report highlights that India's next urban growth phase will emerge from cities with vastly different incomes, industries, and consumer needs. As the country's urban economy continues to evolve, it is essential to recognize and cater to the unique characteristics of each city to unlock their full potential.

In conclusion, India's urban economy is undergoing a significant transformation, with growth shifting beyond the major metropolitan cities. The diverse urban markets, ranging from the Big Six to the Frontier cities, present opportunities for businesses and policymakers to develop targeted strategies and drive growth in the country's next urban phase.
